This lecture, presented to a University of Toronto graduate class in mathematical finance in July 2009, provides a summary of the factors contributing to the collapse of Ontario Hydro in the late 1990s, Ontario’s brief flirtation with an electricity market, and some of the milestones along the path back to a centrally planned electricity sector. The lecture concludes with a few observations about the Ontario Green Energy and Green Economy Act.
